The interior of this Grade A Listed Georgian Townhouse by William Playfair in the East End of Edinburgh’s New Town Conservation Area had been seriously compromised since its construction in the 1890s, following an additional storey being added in the Victorian era, conversion to a post World War II hospital, a hotel and subsequently being subdivided into separate flats. Although hidden over the years, some of the original detail had been retained.
Our client’s brief was to strip out the property and reinstate it back to its original glory. A lot of research was undertaken to ascertain original plasterwork and building fabric detailing, and where damaged or built over, this was replicated and reinstated in conjunction with Conservation specialists.
Authentic Georgian features including flooring, doors, a fireplace and furniture were sourced with a client who had a fastidious eye for historic detailing. These were complimented by modern service facilities, including a contemporary German kitchen, and state of the art bathroom sanitaryware and finishes to create a grand and truly authentic modern Georgian property.
Following several iterations of design proposals, our close liaising and detailed submissions for both the Listed Building Consent and Building Warrant made for a smooth transition from the drawing board to site, and working closely with an experienced conservation contractor lead to a truly stunning refurbishment.
