A private client approached us to prepare proposals to include the enlargement of an existing bungalow, a new rear single storey extension and conversion of the attic including two dormer windows. The proposals also include a ground floor extension of the existing utility room to the east of the property to create a vestibule and boot area to serve the main house.
The existing ground floor plan provided an inflexible arrangement of spaces to the south, west and east externally and internally. By extending the property to the south and extending the roof line, this simplifies the property’s footprint, rationalising the recesses and projections of the existing plan. The glazed extension to the south elevation extends from the same existing roof line of the building, projecting into the garden, acquiring more light and a sense of space, without compromising head height. The proposed palette of materials are restricted to slate, render and dark grey aluminium panels which gives a clear definition between old and new.
The proposed new attic conversion retains the existing roof shape and pitch when viewed from the street and includes a new bedroom dormer. This dormer sits neatly within the roof ensuring its proportions are in relation to the existing property, and similar to others within the vicinity. The rear dormer mirrors the gable wall of the neighbouring property to the west, and although modern in appearance, the colour retains that of the existing slate roof, utilising dark grey aluminium panels. Glazing to the South dormer is a mixture of fixed glazing solid panels and openable windows, the proportions of which reflect the new rooflights and glazed panels on the ground floor.
These alterations and additions to the existing building created a contemporary open plan living dining kitchen space on the ground floor and three additional bedrooms and a bathroom at first floor level.
