Our brief was to upgrade and convert a mews house which was being used as office storage into residential use. The proposed 2-bedroom mews house is situated in Edinburgh’s West End and lies within the New Town Conservation Area.
The former stables were more recently being used as a car garage and the hayloft mezzanine was being used for file storage. The proposal utilised the existing layout at ground floor level to create an open plan living space with kitchen and dining areas and a new feature staircase to access the first floor. The mezzanine level has been extended to accommodate a master bedroom with en-suite, a 2nd double bedroom and a separate shower room. The concept design was largely driven by an aspiration to provide a contemporary space with facilities for modern family living within the historic setting of Edinburgh’s New Town.
To maximise natural light without compromising the internal floor areas, a large rooflight has been added above the stair and the garage door has been replaced with an infill panel consisting of timber and glazed units – a design that allows additional daylight in, whilst providing privacy for residents.
In addition to this, a blocked up opening at the rear of the building has been opened up to form an additional window and the fabric of the building has been upgraded to meet today’s building standards.
The project was successfully completed mid-2024.
