The Granary
Newhall, Penicuik

  • Location: Midlothian, Scotland

    Construction Value: Not Disclosed

    Client: Newhall Events Ltd.

  • Newhall Estate is located to the South of Edinburgh, just off the A702, positioned between Penicuik and Carlops. The Estate is a well established wedding and corporate events venue.

Newhall has been home to generations of families since the 13th century. The main building on the Estate dates back to 1703, when it was constructed by David Forbes. The home has seen its share of additions and alterations since its extension in 1792, but it still maintains its elegant character. Our client, Newhall Events Ltd, sought to improve the current facilities by converting an existing stone barn, known as “The Granary”, located on the Estate into a function space for use in association with the existing hotel and events facility.

BLOCK NINE prepared a full planning application for the proposals which included converting the existing barn to form a flexible events space, suitable for wedding ceremonies and receptions with the capacity for 150 guests, as well as a new extension to house WC facilities

As the proposal is situated within the grounds of Newhall Estate which maintains the listed designation “Gardens and Designed Landscapes” we were mindful that any conversion works would have to be sensitively executed. We therefore took great care to retain the vast majority of existing architectural features and incorporate these into the design proposals. Externally, new flush conservation rooflights are introduced to improve natural lighting within the main space, while new slot windows on the end gable exist as a focal point for ceremonies. Internally, the main events space is characterised by the numerous existing slot and high level windows, while a new Crittall-style glazed screen allows the drama of the full height space to be fully realised upon entry.

A simple palette of timber, slate and stone is utilised to ensure the proposals complement the existing characteristics of the building and the Estate.
