Whittingehame House
Haddington

  • Location: Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland

    Construction Value: Not Disclosed

    Client: Private Client

  • We were approached by our client to undertake internal alterations to the existing Garden Flat located at the lower level of Whittingehame House. Whittingehame House is a category A listed Greek-style neo-classical mansion designed in 1817 by Sir Robert Smirke and it is the centre piece of this large estate located in East Lothian.

The brief for the project was to explore a number of internal layout arrangements which maximised the use of the space to create a luxury 4-bed home which could be used as accommodation for either the client themselves, or as additional guest accommodation.

We worked closely with the client to further establish the brief and their intent for the project, and undertook a measured survey and site analysis to fully understand the potential of the property. Some of the design work included creating new structural openings allowing bedrooms to also accommodate ensuites, removing non-original partitions and ceilings which had been installed at a later date and re modelling the kitchen and living space. The disused services located above the non-original lowered ceiling of the hall were removed and the original coffered ceiling exposed.

In June 2020 Listed Building Consent and Building Warrant approvals were granted allowing works to commence which were completed in December 2021. Each room has been carefully configured and arranged in order to ensure the original historic features and detailing are retained and celebrated. A refined palette of high-quality materials has been intentionally natural and light in appearance to maximise the impact of natural daylight within the spaces which creates a light and characterful property fit for modern living requirements.

The property is currently being marketed by Cullerton’s.
