Country Estate House
Scottish Borders
Project Details.
Location: Scottish Borders, Scotland
Construction Value: Not Disclosed
Client: Private client
Built in 1878, this country estate house is an impressive and commanding period property set in the heart of the Scottish Borders, and surrounded by 22.6 acres of private grounds including a Stable House and Gate House alongside paddocks, grazing fields, stabling and an immaculate C Listed walled garden.
BLOCK NINE were appointed by the client to undertake full architectural services on the renovation of the main estate house. The brief also included a newbuild extension to house gym facilities. Our approach from the beginning of the project was to establish a balance between the preservation of the key historic architectural features while providing a contemporary feel throughout.
The new gym area is nestled between the main house and a sequence of stores housed in a traditional stone outbuilding. To make the most of the fantastic aspect across the South facing landscaped gardens, a frameless glazing system will be installed, aesthetically “bridging” the two existing stone buildings. Internally, a power-floated concrete floor and wrap around roof window create a clean, modern aesthetic. Aluminium detailing further enhances this contemporary insertion, while the addition of two new stone planters helps frame the overall design scheme and brings balance to the architectural composition.
In the main house, features such as existing fireplaces and cornicing are to be retained as part of the extensive renovation works. At the front of the property, a new feature stone portico will enhance the main entranceway; while on the 2nd floor, new contemporary aluminium clad dormers tie in with the modern aesthetic established at ground level and help bring the property into the 21st century.
The project is due to commence on site in October 2020.
