This £14 million award-winning scheme on Middlesex University’s Hendon Campus represents the striking focal point at the entrance to the campus’ main building. By remodelling the existing 1930s quadrangle building which previously housed Middlesex Universities library and covering it with an innovative glazed roof we created a very welcoming space.
The improved courtyard now houses the main reception area and provides space for student services and a performance area whilst also creating an additional area for students to meet which is adaptable for the future needs of Middlesex University. The concept for the roof comes from an arrangement of four separate bays, each an inverted pyramid with its peak supported by a freestanding mast.
Each of the supporting cluster columns sits eccentric to its own bay so that the pyramid becomes skewed rather than orthogonal allowing the columns to be located a greater distance apart giving a more open footprint to the space below.
